Mystery on the Ice

Sunday, 16 March 2008
I was running late, the rain poured down and steam prevented me from seeing through the windows of the double decker bus. "Alexandra Palace..." a monotonous voice said, it sounded like my destination so off the bus I came. I climbed the stairs to the palace and stood outside the doors. I then began to feel out of place. I was surrounded by people producing tobacco smoke and sporting ID chains. It was still raining so I was reluctant to leave the shelter of the palace's entrance too look around. Not wanting to be late, I finally looked around, as soon as I left the shelter I realised where I was. This was not the Ice Rink, it was the other side of the palace, the conference side.

I eventually found by party, in a queue with many younger than myself. As we queued, the rest or our party arrived. As we landed on the ice, someone proposed a game of tag, it's more than possible that the person was myself. This game was unlike any game of tag I had played, no-one knew who was "it". Solving the mystery was the focal point of our game so it got rather boring. I attempted to turn it into a noir mystery but no-one was up to it.

There were holes in the ice, holes in the ice. Holes that were out to get you humble narrator, and they succeed twice. Yes, twice I had bear the cold ice the rink floor. No, thrice. The third time I was pushed. I have my suspicions about who it was but even I could not be sure. After more skating and crazy antics we traided our blades for our shoes and my friends, Converse All Stars never felt so great.

I attempted to write that in noir style but it clearly didn't work out well. I seem to have lost my ability to write. Oh well. Rae Charles' slendiferious writin ability more than makes up for it.

A little tribute to the real noir, a great scene from the film noir, The Big Sleep. Gotta love Bogart.

Untitled Sapphire M.Brown Project

Thursday, 13 March 2008
I've got an idea for a film, well, several films but one has advanced more than the others. It's advanced more than most of the ideas I have then I don't follow through meaning that there is a possibility that I may actually make this. I've got the shot planned out and even a few members of the cast. This is so well organised I can't believe this is me writing. I can't say very much here-someone may steal my idea, I just can't have that. So, if there's anyone out there preferably in the London area and willing to work for free, send me a message.

I thought I'd also do a bit of a film recommendation. I'm currently watching Brick, It's rather amazing and that's not just because I love film-noir. Brick is great in almost every way. The performances thus far cannot be faulted Joseph Gordon-Levitt (that's right, Tommy from 3rd Rock From the Sun) is doing a fantastic job, I might not have recognised him had I not imdb'd his name. The story line is superb and the dialogue (oh my gosh the dialogue) is so very snappy, let's just say, it's so film-noir.

Films I Await: Things we lost in the Fire

Saturday, 19 January 2008
This is meant to be a general blog but I seem to find myself going back to films. They rule my life...with school.

Things we Lost in the Fire is Susan Bier's American debut. She impressed critics with her Dutch hits Open Hearts, Brothers and After the Wedding. Things We Lost in the Fire stars Halle Berry, Benicio Del Toro and David Duchovny in a story about loss, reflection, addiction and hope. It was released in the US in October and since then it has received positive reviews. Unfortunately, it will not be released in the UK until February 1st.

Unlike other films I have awaited such as No Country for Old Men, my desire to watch Things we Lost in the Fire is not the result of the words and opinions of others. The trailer depicts a story that fails to succumb to the many cliches a story of it's nature could yield to. The film stars Halle berry who, over the years, has proved herself to be a more than capable actress. Benicio Del Toro is an actor who I have not seen a large number of performances from but who highly impressed me in 21 Grams. His performance couldsimply be described as believable. Such a partnership of great actor justifies the anticipation of Things we Lost in the Fire.

Films You Love but Daren't Say You Do: Part I

Friday, 18 January 2008
If you're familiar with my other blog (Amateur Critic Reviews) I generally focus on films that are generally considered to be impressive, or dare I say it ‘intellectual’. There are large number of films that many of us like to say we’ve see. These are your Citizen Kanes, Shawshank Redemptions and Godfathers. However, there are always those guilty pleasures. Films that aren’t regarded as particularly good films.

The first film, Rent. In 2005 Christopher Columbus of Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire fame, directed the musical, Rent, based on Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical. It details the lives of several Bohemian’s living in New York City’s East Village. Rent stars Anthony Rappp, Adam Pascal, Rosario Dawson, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Traci Thoms, Wilson Jermaine Heredia and Jesse L. Martin. The acting is rather impressive, as is the storyline in general. The greatest strength, as you may expect with a musical, is the songs. They are the kind of songs that make you feel better, and I am not one to turn down the opportunity to feel good.

Rent has one clear message: No Day But Today; living each day and embracing it as if it is your last. Good Times.
